About Graduate and Professional Scholars
Graduate and Professional Scholars (GAPS) is a student-run organization dedicated to the needs of minority graduate students on the campus of the University of Georgia. GAPS provides academic and social support for its members while also enhancing their matriculation experience.
GAPS seeks to provide an environment that will encourage the development of the total scholar: one who is intellectually, culturally, politically, professionally, spiritually, and socially enriched. Through GAPS, members will share numerous networking opportunities, as well as a social outlet which serves as a vital support system for professional, minority graduate students.
Graduate and Professional Scholars History
GAPS was founded in 1984 by Anthony Granberry and Samuel Matchett, two African-American students who observed a lack of institutionalized academic and social support for minority graduate and professional students at the University of Georgia. They explored the idea of an organization that would respond to the lack of camaraderie and networking opportunities experienced among and by graduate and professional students of Color.
Granberry and Matchett planned several social functions, and their success prompted them to seek University support. Matchett, a law student, secured the financial and moral support of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA). After securing a small amount of funding from University officials, GAPS was established. Since this time, many students, faculty, and staff have contributed to the development of GAPS. Today, GAPS continues to grow and remains active in the University’s effort to recruit and retain graduate and professional students of Color in higher education.
